I understand that Russia has not honored certain agreements such as the Budapest Memorandum in the past, and I understand trepidation with more of the same.

As for the elections, I suppose my paragraph could be misconstrued. Prior to Zelensky, it seems at least Yanukovych was a Russian puppet, which needs to stop. Zelensky is friendly to the West, which is understandable seeing as who came before him.
